BACKGROUND
Before written history, objects were used as symbols to convey powerful messages and emotions. Today many of us take for granted the powerful hold symbols can still have on us. Pearls have been used as symbols to convey the same ideals in many different cultures throughout the ages. To this day pearls are still used as symbols of pristine beauty and elegance. Revered as a precious gemstone, the pearl has been fashioned into valuable pieces of jewelry and sewn on clothing, but they have been used for more than adornment. As part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), pearls have been crushed and ingested to improve eyesight, increase circulation and improve healing. When topically applied, TCM suggests that pearls help treat problem skin and fight aging.
Although available in a variety of hues ranging from black and gold to purple, blue and pale pink, the majority of pearls are white. Regardless of the color, the most valuable pearls are symmetrical and highly opalescent. The unique luster is dependent on the reflection and refraction of light between the pearl’s individual translucent layers. The iridescent properties increase as the layers thin and become more numerous.
SCIENCE
Pearls are created by mollusks, most notably oysters as a defense mechanism to protect them from trapped debris such as sand that would otherwise be irritating. Overtime the grain of sand is coated by layers of aragonite and conchiolin. Largely comprised of calcium carbonate, pearls also contain high levels of amino acids and minerals such as zinc, copper, magnesium, iron, selenium and silicon. Given their nutrient content, pearls are said to enhance cellular activity and metabolism to improve vitality.
BENEFITS
In addition to providing nutritional and conditioning benefits, when crushed and added to cosmetics pearls can impart a degree of luminosity. The inclusion of pearl on the cosmetic ingredient listing can also convey a sense of luxury, elegance and beauty.
