Enzymes are biological catalyst comprised primarily of protein. They are the engines that make possible the varied an subtle chemistry of living organism. Enzymes also offer exciting opportunities within cosmetics. One approach offered by Formulator Sample Shop® is the direct incorporation of enzymes such as Proteases and another is the use of Superoxide Dismutase.

Proteases are the enzymes that degrade proteins. Traditionally in personal care plant based proteases, such as Papain from Papaya or Bromelain from Pineapple, have been used. In cosmetics these enzymes function to breakdown keratin, softening skin and smoothing hair. The enzyme Superoxide Dismutase works to neutralise reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as the Superoxide Anion. This enzyme is often used in personal care to provide protection and reduce irritation.
