Collagen is created by fibroblasts which are special cells found in the dermal layer of the skin. Fibroblasts are responsible for the production of collagen, elastin, and fibronectin, the structural support beams within the skin. Fibroblasts synthesize collagen within the cell and release it through exocytosis, the release of molecules through the cell membrane. Once outside the cell, the collagen molecules will self-assemble, creating the strong structure found within the skin.

Produced by a combination of alkaline and enzymatic hydrolysis, FSS Collagen Hydrolysate SD is a spray-dried powder with an average molecular weight of approximately 2000Da. Because of its molecular weight hydrolyzed collagen will not penetrate the skin or hair, but rather form tenacious films.
