BACKGROUND

Though it is not an herb, the pearl has nevertheless been a crucial element in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The material used as a coating is the samematerial the organism uses to form its shell. Pearls are largely comprised of calcium carbonate, but they also contain large levels of amino acids and minerals, such as zinc, copper, magnesium, iron, selenium, and silicon.

There are nine amino acids that can be considered "essential”, and many of them have benefits to the skin that the pearl helps to accentuate. These amino acids are useful for things such as assisting in calcium absorption, and helping to repair and grow new tissue. These building blocks are important for many functions, including the appearance and function of skin.
